How Families Afford Volo

A way in for every family.

Volo has helped families across a wide range of financial circumstances find a way to enroll. Whether through the Utah Fits All scholarship, need-based financial aid, or a combination of both, our goal is the same: if your child is a good fit for our community, we will work with you to make it possible.

Have questions about funding your child's enrollment? Start a conversation—we'll walk through it with you.

The Utah Fits All Scholarship

Volo is both an approved UFA private school and an approved UFA vendor. Depending on how you educate your child, UFA can apply in two different ways.

Private School Families: The Luminary

For families who enroll their child at Volo as their primary school, the cost of tuition is covered by three contributions working together. Only one of them comes from you.

How a year of tuition comes together:

UFA Scholarship
$8,000 from the Utah Fits All scholarship, applied directly to tuition.
+
Volo Family Grant
A gift from Volo's community of donors that fills the gap, sized to your family's circumstances.
+
Your Family's Part
What you contribute—based on what your family can comfortably manage.
= A Full Year at Volo

Your family's part is figured individually—never assumed, never one-size-fits-all. Tell us about your situation, and we'll give you your actual number, usually within a few days, and before you commit to anything. If your circumstances are unusual, we would rather have the conversation than lose a family that belongs here.

Families who are able to cover more of the cost make it possible for Volo to welcome families who cannot—and a full year of small-cohort, PhD-led learning, four days a week and largely outdoors in the Wasatch Back, is among the most personal and place-rooted educations available anywhere in the valley.

The Founder Rate (returning families) and the sibling discount reduce the cost further. Deposits are included in tuition, not added on top. The same three-part structure applies to Luminary + Quest enrollment.

Homeschool Families: The Quest

If you homeschool and receive the UFA scholarship, you can use those funds to enroll in the Quest—Volo's Friday program of outdoor expeditions, projects, and community. Homeschool UFA recipients ages 5–11 receive $4,000; ages 12 and up receive $6,000.

Program Tuition With UFA ($4,000+)
The Quest (New Families) $2,800 $0 — fully covered
The Quest (Returning Families) $2,300 $0 — fully covered

UFA covers the full cost of the Quest regardless of age bracket, with funds remaining in your child's ESA for other approved educational expenses.

The June 15 Deadline for UFA Families

If you are a UFA recipient planning to use the $8,000 private school scholarship, you must select Volo as your school in your Odyssey dashboard by June 15, 2026. This allows Volo to accept your application so your funding is in place before the school year begins. Contact us if you need help with that step.

UFA Deposit Protection

Families whose enrollment is contingent on the UFA scholarship pay a reduced deposit of $200 rather than the standard amount. This deposit is fully refundable if the scholarship is denied.

Sign your Enrollment Contract, pay the $200 deposit, and your child's seat is held through the summer—no additional payment until your award is confirmed.

Navigating the Timeline

  1. Reach out. Contact us to talk through your situation before signing anything. We will tell you clearly what is possible.
  2. Enroll and hold your seat. Sign your Enrollment Contract and pay the $200 UFA deposit. Indicate that enrollment is contingent on UFA.
  3. Select Volo in Odyssey by June 15. Log in to your Odyssey dashboard and select Volo as your school. We will walk you through it if needed.
  4. Receive your award and accept by June 30. UFA awards are announced June 16. Families must accept by June 30. Volo will send you a conditional aid letter showing your cost either way before that deadline.
  5. If UFA is denied: Your $200 deposit is fully refundable. You can withdraw at no cost, or we can explore alternative funding together through Volo's Bridge Fund and SSS-based financial aid.

The Volo Family Grant

The Volo Family Grant is how we make enrollment work for families across a wide range of means—whether or not you receive the UFA scholarship. Some families combine UFA with a grant; others receive a grant alone. The grant is what brings tuition down to an amount your family can manage.

To determine each family's grant, we ask families to share financial information confidentially through the School and Student Services (SSS) portal, a secure and widely used platform. Volo reviews that information and decides each grant individually. A modest SSS processing fee (around $60) applies; it is waived automatically for families who qualify under federal free lunch guidelines.

The Volo Family Grant is awarded on top of any discount you already qualify for, including the sibling discount and the returning-family Founder Rate. If your situation is unusual or doesn't fit neatly into a form, tell us—we would rather have the conversation than lose a family that belongs here.

Volo's Bridge Fund

For families facing an unexpected shortfall or a sudden change in circumstances, Volo maintains a Bridge Fund reserved specifically for these situations. If a funding gap appears after you've committed to Volo, talk to us—the Bridge Fund exists precisely so a single setback doesn't end a child's enrollment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the UFA scholarship at Volo?

Yes, in two ways. If your child enrolls in the Luminary as their primary school, the $8,000 private school scholarship applies to tuition. If you homeschool and want your child to attend the Quest on Fridays, your homeschool UFA funds ($4,000–$6,000 depending on age) cover the full cost. Funds are directed to Volo through your Odyssey parent dashboard.

I applied for UFA. What do I need to do before June 15?

Enroll at Volo first—sign your Enrollment Contract and pay the $200 UFA-contingent deposit to hold your seat. Then log in to Odyssey and select Volo as your school by June 15. That step is required for us to accept your application. Contact us if you need help with either part.

What if I pay the deposit but don't get the UFA scholarship?

If your enrollment is marked as contingent on UFA and you are denied, your $200 deposit is fully refundable. You can withdraw at no cost, or we can work together on alternative funding through Volo's Bridge Fund and SSS-based financial aid. We won't let a scholarship decision be the end of the conversation.

Can I receive a Volo Family Grant without UFA?

Yes. The Volo Family Grant is open to any family who qualifies, regardless of whether you have or want the UFA scholarship. Many families use one, the other, or both together.

Do I still qualify for discounts with UFA or aid?

Yes. UFA and financial aid apply on top of whatever tuition rate you qualify for. A returning family on the Founder Rate with UFA would pay $7,000 for the Luminary, and the sibling discount lowers a second child's cost further.

What is UFA's current legal status?

The program was ruled unconstitutional by a district court in April 2025 but continues to operate normally while the Utah Supreme Court reviews the case. The 2026–27 application cycle is open and being administered by Odyssey. The Utah Attorney General is actively defending the program. We'll keep families informed of any changes.
